Visa, Mastercard reach $30 billion settlement with US merchants with fees capped for 5 years
Mastercard and Visa have reached a class action settlement with U.S. merchants, in a deal that aims to end 20 years of antitrust litigation around swipe fees and restrictions placed on merchants. The deal will lower credit interchange rates and cap them for five years, Mastercard, Visa and the plaintiffs lawyers said in separate press releases issued Tuesday (March 26). The settlement will also give merchants more choice in how they accept digital payments, including allowing them to steer their customers to the merchants preferred payment methods and placing a surcharge on purchases made with credit cards, according to the releases. Subject to approval by the court, the rules changes will likely be implemented in late 2024 or early 2025, per the releases. By negotiating directly with merchants, we have reached a settlement with meaningful concessions that address true pain points small merchants have identified, Kim Lawrence, president, North America at Visa, said in a Tues

Visa and Mastercard Reach Deal to Lower Swipe Fees, A Win for Merchants and Potential Boost for Consumer Choices: Analyst
Visa Inc  (NYSE: V ) and  Mastercard Inc  (NYSE: MA ) announced a  settlement with U.S. merchants  in which the card networks agreed to lower credit card interchange fees by 4bps in the U.S. The deal also caps swipe fees until 2030.  The settlement also removes anti-steering provisions, allowing merchants to price differently depending on the type of card a consumer uses at purchase. While an interchange cap may limit their medium-term pricing power,  Mizuho  analyst  Dan Dolev  noted the settlement may help relieve regulatory pressure that Visa & Mastercard have otherwise faced. Plus, it should decrease the risk of further reduction to interchange fees between now and 2030. Also Read:   Visa Unveils ... Full story available on Benzinga.com

Its a bittersweet Easter for chocolate lovers and African cocoa farmers but big brands see profits
Shoppers may get a bitter surprise in their Easter baskets this year. Chocolate eggs and bunnies are more expensive than ever as changing climate patterns eat into global cocoa supplies and the earnings of farmers in Africa. Cocoa is the main ingredient in chocolate, and about three-quarters of it comes from trees in West Africa. Severe seasonal winds and heavy rainfall have cut the amount harvested in recent months. The global price of cocoa has soared to record highs. Farmers who harvest cacao beans say the increases aren’t enough to cover their lower yields and higher production costs. But big confectionery companies have maintained profit margins by raising chocolate prices.
